MARK A. MICHEL, Managing Partner at Drexel Hamilton Infrastructure Partners, LP, leads an independent infrastructure fund manager that combines deep industry expertise with industrial best practice operational management. Mr. Michel directs equity investments in high quality infrastructure assets in the energy, transport and water/waste asset classes where we possess deep experience and strong industry and political relationships bringing above-average returns and value to our limited partners by custom tailoring financing solutions across a breadth of capital needs, including greenfield and brownfield projects, acquisition finance, liquidity and growth, restructuring and secondary purchases.
Prior to forming Drexel Hamilton Infrastructure Partners and moving to the “buy-side,” Mr. Michel was Managing Director and Head of Project & Structured Finance at Drexel Hamilton, a full service institutional investment banking and financial advisory firm providing capital solutions to large cap and middle market companies and assisting them to structure and raise equity and debt for a variety of purposes including M&A, working capital, capital expenditures, and refinancings. Mr. Michel predominately focused on infrastructure and energy project financings while on the “sell-side.” Moreover, Drexel Hamilton is the largest service disabled and veteran owned financial institution in the United States where Mr. Michel was responsible for raising capital as well as structuring financial products designed for distribution in the independent broker/dealer channel as well as the RIA and institutional channels. Prior to his time at Drexel Hamilton, Mr. Michel raised capital and worked to structure transactions at Corporate Capital Trust, a $6bn Business Development Company (BDC) owned and operated by KKR & CNL.
Previously to his career in financial services, Mr. Michel served in the White House and was the Navy’s Representative to the National Security Council in the White House Situation Room and was a member of the National Security Council staff. He crafted and conducted daily intelligence briefings with the President, and senior West Wing principals and liaised with global heads of state. Prior to his White House service, Mr. Michel was a career naval officer achieving the rank of Commander and has served in the United States Navy for over 26 years focusing his service within Naval Special Warfare (SEALs) and the Special Operations and Intelligence Communities, and held many senior-level positions throughout the Intelligence Community and National Security establishment. While serving on active duty, Mr. Michel was stationed and deployed across the globe and held significant leadership assignments not only in Washington, but also in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Mr. Michel currently serves in the U.S. Navy Reserve as Executive Officer of Special Operations Command – Europe (SOCEUR) based in Stuttgart, Germany.
Since departing the White House, Mr. Michel has served as an Independent Director at the Babel Street Corporation, a data and text analytics company based in the Northern Virginia technology corridor outside Washington, DC as well as on the Board at the Studio VC Fund, an early stage venture capital fund based in New York. Mr. Michel also works closely with the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) to raise scholarships to support the educational needs for the children of fallen special operators. In addition, Mr. Michel was appointed to the Board for the Central Florida Modeling, Simulation & Training (MS&T) Blue Ribbon Commission, which was established to protect defense industry jobs in Florida.
Mr. Michel earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Auburn University and an MBA in finance from the University of Miami Graduate School of Business.
